Healthy Driver - Safe Traveler

Telemedicine for monitoring the health status of all heavy-duty vehicle drivers and bus operators.

With significant expertise in medical product manufacturing and population health screening, a team of scientists led by Dr. Paunov has developed a unified medical system for monitoring the health of drivers in Bulgaria. Through telemedicine, the Universal Medical Control System (USMC) performs automated medical examinations before every journey for all heavy-duty vehicle drivers and bus operators. The examination is automated and takes between 90 and 200 seconds before each trip. The assessment combines tests for alcohol and psychotropic substances, records blood pressure and body temperature, as well as levels of physical fatigue.

Immediately after the automated examination, a doctor, through remote online connection, makes decisions regarding the driver’s health and determines their fitness for work. The system generates detailed reports for each period, eliminating human error, increasing employee work efficiency due to rapid screening, reducing costs for unforeseen vehicle and equipment repairs, and minimizing the risk of accidents due to the driver’s poor health.

A significant portion of traffic incidents is preventable. Therefore, periodic, mandatory monitoring of the health of drivers operating heavy trucks, dump trucks, buses, trolleybuses, or trams for the transportation of goods, liquids, heavy materials, mail, or passengers is of utmost importance for the safety of people on our roads.

The USMC medical system integrates the collective commitments of national, regional, and local institutions, as well as collaboration with the civil sector, businesses, scientific, and academic communities, under a shared vision and broad national consensus for road safety in the Republic of Bulgaria. This safety is a key indicator of the development of our society.
